A lot of people who are obsessed about weight loss are falling into a trap of eating disorder. These people are mostly those who are looking for the shortcut method of losing extra pounds. They want to skip the hard part of it by focusing on their food intakes. Sometimes and unknowingly, they end up with two of the most common eating disorders – anorexia and bulimia.
Bulimia is defined as an illness in which a person binges on food or has regular episodes of significant overeating and feels a loss of control. To prevent gaining weight, they result to vomiting or laxative abuse.
Anorexia or anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that involves inability to stay at the minimum healthy body weight for the person’s age and height.
Both are serious illnesses that can actually cause death. Knowing their signs is crucial for them to be intervened and treated.
When a person stops eating or hides food in public, it could be a sign. Find ways to know if the person binges in a secret place and then wait to check if he or she will start vomiting afterwards. Check for food hidden in bedrooms, closets or even bathrooms. Always find ways to check for increased vomiting after eating or during late nights.
Then there’s the compulsive exercising. This is obvious when you look in to the persons eyes and notice broken blood vessels. He or she will also be ultra-sensitive to cold. Check for hair loss. And in women, look for the sudden stopping of the menstrual cycle.
A person who is suffering from anorexia or bulimia will have a great need to be perfect. Signs that he or she is suffering from this disorder are the following: mood swings, increased tension and secretive. And this person will be very sensitive when asked if they’ve already eaten.
When a person begins to equate self esteem to weight loss and being skinny, it’s also a sign. Happiness will be defined as losing weight. And the main topic for every conversation with this person is all about losing weight. He or she becomes so obsessed with calorie and fat consumption, diet and food. If this person also hoards diet books, food labels and food diaries, then these are definite signs of eating disorders. All the more if the person increases intake of diet pills, laxatives and other medicines for weight loss just to stop gaining pounds.
If a person starts to browse information about anorexia and bulimia, it could be a sign as well. Then more research about laxatives and diet pills with keywords loss weight quickly or the likes. Then this person will want to know where he or she can get those pills or supplements. Starting to ask other people about extreme weight loss and diets are all signs to look out for. The person would want to gather a lot of information that will help him or her shed off those extra pounds.
When you notice these signs, talk to the person and try to help. Losing weight should be taken the healthy way. Whilst taking shortcuts might give the desired physical results, it won’t result to a well-maintained body. The satisfaction will be short since the person will have to deal with a disease or illness which comes as a side effect to an unhealthy method.
Looking great actually starts with feeling great. And if a person’s body is too sickly, he or she can never feel great.
