Its shocking to note that mood disorders these days are not uncommon.
In the United States alone it is estimated that between 15 and 20 million people suffer from depressive disorders. Most symptoms of depression would be characterized as overwhelming sadness and loss of joy and pleasure in daily activities. Depression has been called the “common cold of mental illness,” not indicating that symptoms of depression are mild, but because they are widespread.

Bipolar disorder is one of many types of depression that affects many individuals. More recently this disorder has been given more public light. Symptoms of this disorder often include mixed states of mania and depression. Often times during the depression phase of bipolar disorder patients are plagued with thoughts of suicide, while during the manic phase the patient has far more energy than normal. Often times they are very talkative, and experience a huge boost in self-confidence.

It is estimated that bipolar disorder affects about 2.3 million adults in the United States in any given year. A worldwide accounting of bipolar disorder in adults is alot higher. Statistical numbers of mood disorders cannot, however, descibe the pain and suffering that such ones go through.

Depression

Everyone experiences a “case of the blues” from time to time, but most often it only lasts a relativly short time. This would not be considered clinical depression, which is far more serious than a “case of the blues.”

What causes clinical depression? While it is not fully understood as to all the causes of clinical depression it is noted that there are many biological and emotional factors that contribute to the development of a severe depressive disorder. It effects more than 19 million American’s a year, and it is estimated that approximately 3% to 5% of teenagers suffer from clinical depression every year.

Those suffering from chronic depression often fail to realize the seriousness of their condition. Just how serious is it? It has often been linked to lack of performance, alcohol and drug abuse, severe feelings of worthlessnes and guilt, and in many cases suicide.

Often times having an empathetic friend that will lend a listening ear can bring great relief. However because the biochemical factor that is involved with the disorder it is not often realistic to rely solely on your friends listening ear.

Mood disorders such as clinical depression often have a great impact on family members. However, there are things that family members can do to help those ailing from the condition. Wholehearted support is vital when a loved one is suffering from this disorder. It is often helpful to study up on the condition and become thoroughly familiar with the disorder. This will allow ones to be able to better cope and deal with the sufferer.

Bipolar Disorder

Living with depression can be a great challenge, but the challenge is even greater when it is coupled with mania, a mood swing in bipolar disorder. Family members may often be confused as to the erratic behavior of those suffering from bipolar disorder. Bipolar’s effects are not just directed one way. Often times the pain is reflected inwards as well to the sufferer. The patient suffering from bipolar disorder may often be left confused at the lack of stability in their life.

What is the cause of bipolar disorder? Through several studies scientists are trying to uncover the cause of bipolar disorder. While there is no known single cause of bipolar disorder it is know that genetics plays a big part in the cause. Family members that are directly related to ones who suffer from bipolar depression have a greater chance of developing the bipolar or major depression in your lifetime.

Bipolar disorder knows no gender, and has an equal opportunity of affecting both sexes. Most often the disorder starts developing in young adulthood, however cases studies have shown development of the disorder in younger age groups. Since the symptoms are so wide in their range it is often hard to detect, especially when intervals between mania and depression can last years.

While living with depression or bipolar depression may be hard, and equally as hard to diagnose there is hope for those that suffer from them.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen may also be used to treat arthritis. Some prescription drugs like celecoxib, rofecoxib, and valdecoxib are shown to give effective pain relief. However, these drugs may bring minimal or serious side effects depending on the individuals who use them. Cardiovascular bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, and skin reactions are some of the usual side effects that might be encountered in using pain relievers.
Engaging in healthy diets may prevent the development of arthritis or give arthritic pain relief. With daily consumptions of essential vitamins and minerals, individuals who experience arthritis are supplying the body the components it needs to fight the pain and swelling that causes joint pain. Recent medical studies show that food high in omega-3 fatty acids, a group of polyunsaturated fat is essential in alleviating joint pains caused by arthritis. The best sources of these fats are fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts. Maintaining healthy food consumptions and having a physically active lifestyle is essential not only in the prevention of arthritis but also improvements in one’s overall health.

Unlike traditional corn, Supersweet corn has more natural sugars and stays sweet longer. To keep kernels sweet and tender, always store fresh corn in the refrigerator in a high-humidity drawer or wrapped loosely in plastic. For perfect grilled corn follow these tips:

Out of the husk-for slightly charred, smoky flavor:

Brush ears with melted butter or flavored oil; grill, turning often, until kernels are golden, 7 to 10 minutes.

In the husk-for more intense flavor:

Pull back the husks and remove silks; replace husks and tie in place with a strip of husk or string. Soak in water for 10 minutes. Grill, turning often, for 7 to 10 minutes. For easy eating, pull back the husks and tie together to form a handle.

In foil-for moist, make-ahead corn:

Place each husked ear on a square of foil; brush with butter (plain or seasoned with garlic and/or herbs), barbecue sauce or flavored oil; wrap ears. Grill, turning often, for 7 to 10 minutes.

Indoor “grilling”:

Place husked ears on a shallow pan, lightly brush with butter, about 6 inches from a hot broiler; grill, turning often, until golden, 7 to 10 minutes.

After grilling, add flavor to the corn with one of these combinations:

Easy Pesto Butter: Mix one stick of softened butter with 2 tablespoons pesto-from a jar or made at home.

Buffalo Corn Butter: Mix 1/2 stick softened butter with 1 tablespoon each of hot sauce and lemon juice.

Herb Butter: Mix 1/2 stick softened butter with 1 teaspoon of your favorite dried herb (such as rosemary or dill).

Goat Cheese Spread: Combine 1/4 cup goat cheese with 2 tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon dried thyme.

Sesame Soy Sauce: Combine 1/4 cup soy sauce with 2 tablespoons each lime juice and toasted sesame oil.

This is where home remedies come in handy so you can at least relieve the pain somewhat until such a time that you can get to see a doctor.

There are a number of different home remedies that you can try to ease the pain of ear infection and they are all much more effective if you use them at first sign of an earache. If your earache is severe then you might not get much relief until you have visited your doctor.

One cause of ear infections is swimmers ear which is the result of a fungal infection that has developed from moisture left in the ear canal. This can occur after a person has been swimming and some water is left in the ear. Although having fungus in the ear sounds really gross, this type of infection is quite easy to treat if you start treatment early. One of the best home remedies for swimmers ear is a mixture of water and vinegar. You mix together equal parts of water and vinegar and then place a few drops into the sore ear. Let the mixture sit in the ear for a few minutes and then gently rinse with warm water.

The mixture of water and vinegar works by changing the pH level of the excess water in the ear and then the fungus cannot thrive in this new pH level. If you treat this type of infection early enough the results are usually quite fast and it can clear completely overnight. The same basic principal works for lemon juice, just squeeze a few drops of lemon juice into the ear and this also changes the pH level, killing off the fungal bacteria.

Another good home remedy is to use a warm compress against the ear. If you don’t have a wheat bag you can easily create your own with a sock and some rice. You just pour a cup of rice into a sock and then tie off the top of the sock so the rice can’t spill out. Put the sock into the microwave and heat it for about one minute. Placing the rice sock against the ear will help soothe the ear and relieve the pain. If you do this repeatedly it will also help encourage draining of any buildup within the ear.

Our last home remedy for ear infection uses onion, garlic and olive oil. First, chop the onion and garlic finely and then cook them in the olive oil on a low heat. When the mixture has reduced, drain the oil into a glass container. Then when the mixture is cool, place a few drops into the affected ear. This will give some pain relief and also help to shift any wax buildup in the ear.

If you don’t get results from any of these home remedies or if the pain is very severe then you should consult a doctor and get some prescribed antibiotics. Don’t give up after just trying one remedy though as some remedies work better for different people, if one doesn’t work another might. Once you know which one works for you then you will have a great remedy on hand for the next time you have an earache.
