The New Amazon Kindle

The ability to convert print books into digital form, and then download them onto portable, hand held devices, has been around for many years. However, it is only recently that the idea has started to gain traction with public at large. What changed was that the largest online retailer of books, Amazon.com, got into the game with the Kindle. While the Amazon Kindle is the most popular e-reader, the question is whether or not it’s the best.

Here is a list of some available features on the Kindle to help you decide if it is the right choice for you.

1. Size. The newest version of the Amazon Kindle weighs a scant 8.7 ounces. That’s less than a typical book. It is 7.5 inches high, 4.8 inches wide and about 1/3 of an inch deep. It’s light, small and fits well in the hand.

2. Display. The Kindle‘s viewing screen is 6 inches (measured diagonally). Glare isn’t a problem with the newest version, either. Amazon uses what they call E-Ink which makes for a more familiar reading experience. The contrast is good and reading isn’t as tiring as it is on other e-readers. This is largely due to having a 16 level gray scale, as opposed to the 8 level found in mos of the Kindle‘s competitors.

3. Wireless. All current versions of the Kindle include Wi-Fi access. However, if you upgrade to the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi, you won’t have to pay anything for the wireless connection. There is no need to pay extra fees for wireless downloads. Using a 3G network means fast downloads; normally less than a minute, depending on coverage. The Kindle 3G also gives you coverage in 100 different countries around the globe. It will cost $50 more, but will be a good value over the life of your Kindle.

4. Titles. Amazon keeps adding to the number of titles available for download to its device. It wasn’t all that long ago that they boasted having over 200,000 titles, but now that number has grown to over 670,000 available book titles. Oh, and that doesn’t include the 1,800,000 titles in the public domain that you can choose from. Plus, they offer magazines and blogs as well.

5. Storage. The newest version of the Amazon Kindle has more than doubled over the previous incarnation. It used to hold about 1,500 titles, but that has now ballooned to 3,500. It really is like carrying around a library in your pocket!

6. Battery life. When the wireless is turned off, battery life is about one month. When have the wireless on, the battery life ranges from ten days for the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi to three days for the regular model. Again, this is a marked improvement over previous models.

These are only a few of the features available on the Amazon Kindle. As of this writing the regular Kindle is $139 and the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi is $189. It’s always smart to compare different brands and models before buying, but it’s hard to imagine that there would be much real competition for such a well thought out product.

Electronic Book reader

New technologies have brought many changes to our society. One of the most interesting, at least to an avid reader, is the advent of digital books, or ebooks. These are simply digital versions of a book and with advances in the technology used to read them, electronic book reader, you can use one device to browse, pick out, pay for, download, and read your book, all in just a matter of minutes.

Amazon, one of the biggest online retailers in the world, was the company that first started the widespread use of digital books. They have developed a book reader, they call it a Kindle, that is one of several different electronic readers on the market today.

The Kindle enables the user to pick out their books from Amazon and have them downloaded and ready to read in a few minutes. The Kindle comes equipped with Whispernet, which is a network that runs off of the Sprint network.

This means that anyone who is using a Kindle, can access the internet anywhere there is wireless service. Which would be virtually anywhere in the country.

You don’t need to sign up for Sprint, or any other carrier for that matter, it comes as a standard feature on your kindle.

When shopping for a book reader you do have to keep in mind that Amazons Kindle isn’t the only reader on the market. There are many other brands to choose from and you should look over the different models to find the one that has the best features for you and your lifestyle.

Most readers will cost between $250 and $399. The readers are usually around 10 ounces and about 7.5″x 5.3″. As you can see from the dimensions, they are small and lightweight which makes it very convenient.

Readers have an average screen size of about 6″ diagonal.

The amount of titles available does differ between one company and another. The number of titles you can choose from can range from 60,000 on the low side, all the way up to over 150,000 on the high side. That’s a lot of books, all right in the palm of your hand, your own virtual library.

Readers can hold between 300 to over 1,000 book titles and some models have the capacity to add external memory of up to 16GB. That’s a lot of books!

Many, but not all, book readers have wireless capabilities that will not only allow you to download books, but also check out blogs, online newspapers, and popular magazines.

You can buy a Kindle right on Amazon, you may also be able to find other brands on Amazon as well. These units are in high demand so if you’re planning on buying one as a gift or for an upcoming vacation, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute or you might find that they are out of stock.

Using an electronic book reader is a great way to enjoy modern technology while enjoying a good book. What a great combination.

Part 9 – More Monetizing Options

We’ve discussed about using Google Adsense programme and other merchants’ affiliate programmes to generate profits from your blog. However, we have a lot of other options ot monetize your blog, so we’re going to look into that today.

The first option we’ll be looking at is Chitika (www.chitika.com). Chitika is a very innovative contextual advertising programme because it can serve very detailed advertisements. For example, on your technological gadget blog, Chitika will show advertisements for tech gadgets such as iPods. The way they show it is in different tabs: one for “Best deals”, another for “details”, another for “reviews” and so on. This way, it is more of an informational section for your visitor rather than an advertisement, and naturally the click-through will be higher. You can apply here: https://chitika.com/application.php,type=mm

You can also be an affiliate for Amazon.com. Amazon offers a wide range of products but its predominant domain is in books. Whatever your niche is about, you can probably find a book about it on Amazon.com. Join their Associate programme here: https://associates.amazon.com/gp/flex/associates/apply-login.html/

Once you join them, you can refer visitors to them and earn up to 10% commission. It’s not a lot but if you can manage to refer big volumes of visitors, Amazon is for you. This programme really shines when it comes to the ways you can refer visitors: you can use their predefined templates to pull up recent items that match a certain criteria you set, you can target your ad to show a specific item on sale or you can just simply weave your referral links into your blog posts.

Last but definitely not least, you can sell advertising space on your blog if your blog is truly popular. Just take a look at blogs like http://xiaxue.blogspot.com. That blog receives over 10,000 pageviews every day and naturally merchants will want to strike a deal with the blog’s owner to post their advertisements there. If you manage to pull in huge amounts of traffic like that blog, you can definitely get people to buy ad space on your blog for prices from $150/month upwards, depending on your blog popularity.

To gauge how much pageviews and visitors you get everyday, just use the free tool available at http://www.statcounter.com. They have a very detailed setup guide there so I won’t go into it.

If your blog has not acquired large amount of visitors yet, you can still sell ad space on your blog on a per click or per impression basis. Just visit sites like http://www.adbrite.com. For a complete list of these sites, visit http://performancing.com/node/60.

Hopefully, that will help you maximize earnings and profits from your blog!
